I found that most of the different things that we worked on helped with the vision of what my class can be and the fun I can have with the students. To encourage them through the use of this technology will allow them to succeed in their careers.
The amount of technology that is out in the real world will only increase so our responsibilities as educators is to make sure our students thrive in our class room by giving them every opportunity to excel.
Before beginning this class, I was aware of the technology available to assist the teacher in and out of the instruction time. So ready to excite my students with all of this technological education.
I do plan on maintaining a blog for the benefit of the students and parents, for information as well as for instruction. I hope that all of this information and technology is available in all schools for the benefit of the students and their futures.

Thing #23
plcmcl2-about.blogspot.com/
This is a website I searched in Google for in reference to 23 Things. Helene Blowers, Public Services Technology Director for the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County (PLCMC), set up 23 Things as a program for the staff. 23 Things is a loose interpretation of the 43Things website, which allowed you to set and track personal goals and 43 Things I (or You) might want to do this year, an article by Stephen Abram. The 23 Things in our 3040 class, was taken from someone's idea and work.
I will use the Creative Commons and as well as the copyright videos in my classes so the students can see that it is only fair to give credit where credit is due.

My binders titles are 1) Persuasive Writing, 2) Research Paper and 3) Poetry in the 20th century
The one I am sharing is the poetry in the 20th century
http://www.livebinders.com/play/present?id=367714
This is a neat website and will be useful to the students for portfolio projects as well as research papers. Then they can save their work instead of having to print it. In case they get into a subject and change their mind about one of the sources, then it is just a matter of adding the new one and not printing a lot of new stuff. Working on a research paper, they can look at it all on line and then have the binder so the teacher can look at it to see where the search information came from.
I think for the teacher this will be great to keep documents and project ideas and such. It will consume less space than the hardbound binders and reduce research time for projects and information. Keeping up with tests from year to year and handouts, will make it so much easier.

Animoto is awesome. I am going to look into this for use in the classroom for projects for students. I never knew anything like this was out there and this is so cool. The endless possibilities are staggering of how to use this within an English III class on research or literature. The students will have a great time just putting stuff together. So neat.

This is such a great motivation video for me as a teacher. This is why I want to teach. I think that youtube offers so much in the way of visual aids that we are fortunate in this day and time to have it around. This is not something that was around for me as a student in high school and I see that it can make a total difference in the learning levels of all students. Visual aids can be used to motivate the students.

I just recently became a member of TeacherPop. I became a Twitter member in January or February of this year, 2012 for my 3040 EDUC Technologies class. I have been a Facebook member since February 2009. Facebook keeps me in touch with my friends and reconnects us with old friends. I joined Facebook in 2009 to get in touch with our classmates for a 25 year class reunion. Facebook was how we communicated, since we are all so busy and spread out across the nation. Personally I think on an individual basis it is great.
I think I will use the social sites to remind students and parents about homework, tests and extracurricular activities.

Social networking sites are a means of keeping up with what is going on. They can be used for good and bad. The kids don't mind putting their whole life story for everyone to read. Some people put every little thing they do, "I sneezed in Chem class today", "I am going to the store" and being "tagged" or "poked" are just a few of the hazardous (silly) aspects to deal with.
As educators they can relay ethical information to students and parents such as reminders about homework or parent-teacher conferences, but should not be used as a one-on-one basis for privacy issues. They can keep the educator in contact with other educators and keep an open mode of communication.
As an administrative tool, they can be used to observe acts of cyber bullying or even in-school antics of upcoming pranks. I do not think that these should used between the teacher and student, but between teacher and parents.
I think in class as a learning tool, they could be useful, but you would have to have some pretty upstanding students that you know that you could trust with the privilege. Potential for positive school wide or extra-curricular activities could be a benefit to using them.

The bookmarking tools are inventive for the use of the teacher. I think that being able to use these to network with other teachers about topics can keep the classroom learning environment "fresh" and alive. If you do the same old thing, the students are going to get bored. This can be beneficial to the students as well. It will give the students more outlets for research and collaboration projects. I can see this as a good organizational tool for the teacher as well to keep up with what is taught from year to year and keep good ideas from getting lost in the shuffle.

Thing #16
I chose to use Netvibes to do my start page. So much time and creative information can be shown on that start page. I think these types of pages will be great for individual presentations in English in secondary schools. The different ways to show the creative side of the student will help those who feel like they are not creative, like me. I think once I set up my classroom I will use this as a way to do my start page.
The online calendar 30 boxes is useful and seems to be easy to add information to it. The fact that there are "to do" lists that the students can use to let me know where they are in the progress of their projects. I like looking at calendars to see where I am and where I need to be, to help me keep up, I believe these will be great sources for the students and teachers alike.
I like the Ta da list of online lists as it seems easier and I love the thought of Jott personally but I don't think it would be feasible for students. I would say that if I was going to use a "to do" list I would stick with the calendar because it has both the "to do" and calendar apps. Instead of doing an additional app for a list.
The backpack program is awesome, using all of the above listed items together on one site, it is great.
All of the products available for better quality production of the students work are really good, I just hope that where I teach we will have a fraction of that available to us. I love the 30 boxes calendar and lists site, I feel it will be useful at home and school.

The wiki's are interesting and I am sure I will be able to use them in group presentations and projects. I think it is great that they can add and change their formatting and ideas.
I do think there would have to be rules about changing another student's work though. I could see there being problems with some students about wanting to control the tone of the whole project. Team work would be needed to have this used as a successful learning tool.
Here is one I set up for my son's benefit.

Thing 14
These tools will be useful to the student in several classes, because it allows the teacher to illustrate visually, what is needed on a project. Students comprehend things differently, so the use of the flow charts and mind maps will allow the visual concept and clarification they might need.
I went into the Gliffy website and it was pretty good for flowcharts.
I did not care for the Bubbl.us as it was not easily accessible. Although it might be okay for the student, I feel like it was difficult at first use to be able to decipher the language. I find as a future teacher it might be a little time consuming, if you use mind maps very often.
I did however like the easy access use of mindmeister. Easy to use and work with. If a teacher is using very many mind mapping activities, this would be my first choice. I especially like the brainstorming and to-do-list templates.
I love lists and I will incorporate to do lists in my instruction period through power points and transparencies.

Zoho Writer is a pretty unique website. Being given the opportunity to use so many great sources in which to have access will allow the user a much broader accessibility to documents and projects. Just the software space on you computer alone is worth using it. Using it in English projects, will allow the students that can, access to be able change group projects and presentations as they need. Since I am planning on using a blog within my class the use with a blog with be helpful.
Google Docs: This is pretty cool software, as far as English projects, it can be helpful with the students to create projects by having the never ending internet sources for creativity points available to the students and groups. They can all do a search for particular topic or idea within their subject so as to save time with research gathering.

Thing 12#
So much out there to learn about in the technological world especially helps for teachers and students. The Google alerts tool is pretty neat because of the quickness of the information being sent to you. I am a big Chipper Jones fan (not quite stalkish) and Jeff Fisher fan (to the point of stalking) ha ha, ,just kidding, but I could put in any news that I want keep up with in regards to a specific topic or issue and have it sent to me. New ways to teach a specific standard, or new technology in regards to English for high school students and if I know that a student is interested in something, and it is content worthy, I could forward it to them. The calender is good, but I find that my phone works better for me, only because I know how to work my way through the process. The translate would be awesome if you have some students within your class who are not fluent in the English language and accidentally write the wrong English word.
Thing #11
The RSS reader, again it is great. Just the fact that you are able to subscribe to something and not have to search for that web page every time you want or need it, is just such a time saving commodity. The easiest way I found was once I am on the page and it I provides the information I am looking for, to find the RSS feed symbol and subscribe to it. Easy peasy. I feel like the google blog search was the easiest only because it seems to work well with all of my other google sites, but I am sure the other ones once investigated more deeply will become just as easy. The Topix.net was a little harder only because I couldn't use firefox to use it properly. A lot of different feeds were provided in just about anything you want to search, so many different topics, blogs and information that you don't really realize is that easy to get.
Thing #10
The RSS reader is great. The fact that you only have to go to just one site to see your incoming information changes your whole outlook on how you gather information daily. Being able to have it all come to you without looking at each website is a time saver for not just teachers but students and everyone. I know a lot of time I do not read a newspaper because of all the time to find what interests you. Having this information sent to you automatically is awesome. I think if you set up the sites on your blogs so that a student can see your blog they can just look up information and this will help them to gather more information accurately.
Thing #9
Wow! All of the different generators that are available to you and that can make different and creative classroom signs and activities. There is so much available to you to make your classrooms inviting and knowledge-learning worthy. I wish I had more time to play with all of this stuff it is great. I think having this available for students as well will be a great help for their projects and homework assignments. The different items that you can create will help with the creative and artistic talents of the students.

Flickr is quite unique in discovering things you can do with your photos and/or art. I think the fact that the students can use this mode of technology to improve their skills as artists by including pictures will have an exciting impact on their studies and academics. The sharing of photos gives everyone an opportunity to see a different side of the artists as well as see what other artists are visioning, through writing as well as portraits. It allows each one of us to search for more artistic way to provide information. Mashups are pretty cool.

Thing 7
I think that this is such a great awareness campaign for hunger and homelessness in our society. Sometimes we do not always see or even acknowledge this side of our community. As students I think we are so overwhelmed with the study and academic life that maybe we don't realize this is going on around us. The food pantry on campus is just one of the programs available to students to take advantage of or us to help them by donating if we are able. Next time you are at the store, just buy one extra can of something, then then next time do it again. Take them to a food pantry and help with this devastating problem in our society.
I can see that Flickr is a very useful tool for posting pictures. I think this will be helpful with high school age students to help them be more aware of their surroundings. The awareness of the positive and negative should make a difference in the people and members of society that they turn in to in the future.
I have never used this type of site before and it was interesting. I am looking forward to delving further into the technology. I do believe that people do need to remember the personal aspect of photos. Make sure that you want it to be shown and make sure that anyone else in the photo doesn't care either.

Thing 6
The Web 2.0 Awards nominee I chose was ask.com. I have used this website as a search engine before and it takes you just about anywhere you need to go to get your information. I find it easy to just ask the question and it takes you to the appropriate links and sources. I think that for any age that this would be a useful tool to do preliminary research.
Thing 5
Some much information. So much technology. How much is funneled in to the public school system by money or materials? After reading the Web 2.0 , I was surprised with the fast paced direction of the web for education and technology. The fact that someone had to "police" the "fragmenting" made me question some issues. After further investigation I see that they are keeping a good watch over everything which makes me feel better about using this technology in my classroom. The fact that everything is all integrated with the whole system is "mind blowing". Blogs and pod-casts are a unique way to involve the students, especially high school age. These make the web more user friendly and entice more people to use all the sources available.
The Horizon Report is very descriptive as to what is available out there, from collaboration sites to social sites to research availability. Of course with anything new the downfall is it goes out quick so it must always keep up with the current information and technologies available to teachers and administration. Collaboration experiences can be enhanced by the use of the new technology. The goal to keep ahead of the research is a benefit to teachers and students so that the students are able to go in to real world situations and actually be productive citizens. Due diligence is a great motivation for me as an aspiring teacher.
The technical world we live, work and study in constantly change, but most technology is second nature to children. My Junior in high school, tells me he is multitasking by being on his phone and on his computer on Facebook, email and Twitter as well as working on homework. It is just like an extension of his arm or a third arm in the way his processes work. He knows life to be very fast paced and informative and as I am sure all future students will as well. Technology will keep improving the minds and dreams of our future leaders.

Thing #4
After reading several classmates blogs, I found that I enjoy going and seeing what they think of what has been posted. Whether there are positive or negative comments, I feel a sense of accomplishment in just getting something being commented on. As I am several years older than most of my classmates and although I have 25 years plus of dealing with computers, blogging in no way compares to the computer use of my previous job of 20 years. It is interesting to see the different opinions and comments in regards to your thoughts on education.
I feel like the comments help you get a more well-rounded view of the subject as opposed to it being one sided. The different views help us out as teachers to see how individuals see things differently.
The blogs I have chosen to follow within the class are Mellissia Troyer (http://epmom6.blogspot.com/), Kim Messer (http://kimberlymesser.blogspot.com/),Chelsea Ninness (http://chelseaninness.blogspot.com/), Cortne Hunt (http://cnghunt.blogspot.com/) and Stefanie Tate (http://stefanietate23things.blogspot.com/). I chose each of the following: Melllissia, because she said I had to, LOL, just kidding. Mellissia and I had a class together last semester and have become friends. We are in 3 classes together this term and taking the same online class. I like to see what she has to say as she is planning on teaching the same thing as I am, High School English; Kim, I like her honesty and straightforwardness. I feel she will be an awesome teacher; Chelsea, is a sweet young lady who puts up with an old woman. Cortne and Stefanie: I like the unique spelling of their names. They seem like unique individuals who will make great teachers.
The outside blogs I have chosen are Educational Technology Professor (http://girlprof.blogspot.com/) and Free Technology for Teachers (http://www.freetech4teachers.com/) I chose the Educational Technology Professor as it will keep the ever changing technologies present so that you know what is constantly coming to the forefront. I chose the Free Technology for Teachers because anything FREE is great for teachers.
With just a little research you can find so many things out there, some free some not, that can total make the difference between a good teacher and great teacher. By commenting they at least know that they are appreciated for their research. Thank you.

Thing #3
As a college student in the teaching program, I think the blog will be a good reference for me to see how other students are handling their particular class loads and specific education classes. I enjoy seeing the regular person's opinions on individual classes, not just the academic points but the social aspects, like the teacher's personality and teacher's classroom setting.
I want to work with high school students and teach English. I think that as a teacher, I can use the blog to let the students know that they are all important and special in their own unique way. I would like to be able to use the blog as a way to converse with the students about topics we might have discussed in school that day. Maybe even allowing that to be a forum for essay papers topics.

Thing 2
I set the blog up as David's mom, Anita Taylor, because most any time I am being introduced that is how I am introduced. My son is very active in our community and is a politician in the making. He never meets a stranger. The blog itself was pretty easy to set up. I don't think I had any major issues anyway. My computer didn't crash anyway. It just took taking time to read and following instructions.
My avatar was the same thing. I was going for a mirror image of myself. I settled for what was like me, I think. After going through all of the hair styles and clothes to set up the avatar, I found that I am out of date in both my hair style and my clothing attire. It does reflect my love of football and puppies.

After reading the 7 and 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners, I found the easiest habit for me would be tied between 1)Begin with the end in mind and 7 and 1/2) play.
I find it easy to set goals for myself and don't mind doing what I have to do to complete those goals. I love to play, I love enjoying life and play goes along with that concept. I enjoy watching football and my son play golf.
The hardest habit would be 6) using the technology to my advantage. I have worked with computers and in an office setting for the past 26 years. I am fully aware of all of the technology available, but my fear comes from the students not having the access because of the rural school setting. Obtaining funds for the technology is difficult. I hope to be able to find grants for the technology.
I would like to be able to obtain a good comfort level with all of the sources of technology available. I am hoping by doing these projects and tutorial's I will gain a vast knowledge of what will be available for use in my high school classroom.
Setting up the blog itself was pretty easy, actually coming up with something to say freaks me out.
